When Disney first announced that they are coming up with their own subscription video-on-demand streaming service, there were mixed reactions all over the world. While some looked forward to what it had to offer, many others said they will not pay for another subscription service “because Netflix is enough.” But guess what? On the first day of launch, the streaming service already have more than 10 million subscribers!
Though Disney+ is currently not available in the Singapore market yet, we managed to creep onto the streaming service and watched The Mandalorian, an original series from Disney+ set in the Star Wars universe that takes place five years after the Return of the Jedi.
Starring Game of Thrones‘ Pedro Pascal, The Mandalorian is set after the fall of The Empire and before the emergence of the First Order, following the story of a Mandalorian bounty hunter.
Though the bounty hunter is the protagonist, another character have stolen the hearts of viewers- baby Yoda.
*Warning: Spoilers ahead.
After completing a task, the Mandalorian bounty hunter was referred to a client with Imperial connections to find a 50-year-old target in a desert planet called Arvala-7. As a down payment, the Mandalorian received a bar of Beskar steel that is known to be sacred to the Mandalorian people. After a long and dangerous journey, the Mandalorian finally reaches the target but found out that it is an infant of the same species as Yoda, a Jedi Master.
The Mandalorian then escorts “baby Yoda” to his ship only to find that it has been stripped by Jawas. To recover the parts they stole, the Mandalorian promised them to get the Egg from the den of a large beast. While he got out of the beast’s den, the obnoxious beast refused to spare his life and continued attacking the Mandalorian violently.
Just then, baby Yoda started using The Force on the beast, giving the Mandalorian a chance to kill it. After overexerting itself, Baby Yoda fell asleep while the Mandalorian went on to fix his ship and not long after, left the planet together with the child.
Since the two episodes aired, baby Yoda’s popularity has skyrocketed and flooded various social media platforms.
