Kim Hyoyeon have always been in the limelight since she debuted as a member of Girls’ Generation (SNSD) in 2007. Today, she is slowly shedding off her K-pop idol image and is now hyping crowds at electronic dance music (EDM) festivals worldwide as DJ Hyo.
This transformation may not come as a surprise to SONEs (SNSD’s fanclub) since Hyoyeon have always been known as the main dancer of SNSD but it did surprise many others (including us) when her label S.M. Entertainment announced in April she would be making a comeback as DJ Hyo with a tropical-future house song titled “Sober”.
Positive reviews for DJ Hyo
Though Hyoyeon only entered the EDM scene as DJ Hyo this year, she has already made a name for herself and played at some of Asia’s biggest clubs and EDM festivals including the recent Legacy Festival in Singapore. She’s also received positive reviews for her works behind the turntables. The 30-year-old even collaborated with American DJ 3Lau for her second single “Punk Right Now”.
When asked about her DJ gig, Hyoyeon told SCMP that her interest for EDM began during her SNSD days, where she would often imagine herself on the DJ stand hyping the crowd. She also revealed that back when she was in SNSD, there was a part of her that would rely on her group members but now that she is performing solo, there are challenges and pressures that she have to face on her own; all of which contributed to her growth as an artist.
