4 Different Skin Types and Tips On How To Care For Them

Quick question. Have you ever looked at your friend’s skin and wish you had it? And sometimes it may even be the other way round. Well, everyone has a different skin type from one another. Yours could be oily, your best friend’s might be dry, and your mother’s could be a combination of both. So how do we know the type of skin we have and what is the ideal skincare routine to follow so that we can fully cater to our skin’s needs? That’s exactly what we are going to share with you in this article.

First, we need to know the four main skin types: dry, oily, sensitive and combination.

#1 DRY SKIN

For this skin type, you may have a higher tendency to feel a tightness in your skin. This happens as there is a lack of oil and sebum production and there may also be signs of flaking, itching or roughness. People of this skin type usually have extremely tiny pores that can barely be seen. In some cases, it is even possible for your skin to develop invisible little cracks. These cracks are the one that irritates your skin and make it appear rough and flaky!

CARING FOR DRY SKIN

Here’s a common myth. There are many people who think that drinking an increased amount of water can help with dry skin. However, that’s not true. Drinking water does not help to lock moisture in your skin like how other ingredients like hyaluronic acid do.

1. Use a gentle cleanser
To seal moisture in your skin, you would first need to be careful of the cleanser you use. Make sure to choose a gentle gel cleanser. Compared to foam cleansers, gel cleansers usually work well for people with dry skin as it does not harshly strip all the oil away from the skin.

2. Avoid products containing oil and alcohol
When shopping for skincare products, keep in mind to take a look at the ingredients. Make sure that there is no oil and alcohol, as one would simply make your skin oilier, and the other would would dry out your face even more and possibly cause irritation.

3. Moisturise quickly
Within a minute after a shower or washing our face, our skin can actually get dehydrated really quickly. So immediately apply a moisturiser right after you step out of the shower.

4. Wear sunscreen
We know people who applies sunscreen only when they go to the beach or for a swim. However, sunscreen is actually for more than just beaches and pools. Sun damage is one of the contributing factors to dry skin too, so if you have dry skin, don’t skip the sunscreen! Or if you go out with makeup on, at least use a foundation that has SPF30.

#2 OILY SKIN

If you are constantly stocking up on your oil blotting sheets, touching up your makeup with a mattifying or loose powder all the time or you just simply seem to be “glowing” 24/7, then you belong to this category. It can be a trouble having this skin type, because all of the excess oil and sebum tend to cause your makeup to be unable to stay on your face perfectly throughout the day. Your T-zone (forehead, nose and chin) area has the highest tendency to be the oily as compared to other parts of your face. Also, your face will often look greasy and feel sticky. And ladies, we all know what happens your face is too oily… That’s right, acne breakouts!

CARING FOR OILY SKIN

Many people with oily skin either like to wash their face many times in a day or use harsh cleansers that really strip their faces of all the oil. However, that does not help with controlling the oil in your skin. Sure, you would have dry skin for a few minutes, but after that, your skin will start to produce more oil in order to compensate for what was lost from your face wash. This is how your plan to remove the excess oil on your skin will backfire.

1. Do not over-wash your face.
Washing it twice in a day is enough, unless you perspire excessively from activities like working out.

2. Do not pick at or squeeze your pimples.
Squeezing your pimples can hurt the skin and thus cause more bacteria to enter deeper into the skin. This will cause them to heal in a longer period of time.

3. Look for noncomedogenic products
When shopping for cosmetics or skincare products, look for products labelled “noncomedogenic”. This means that the product would not clog your pores.

4. Exfoliate weekly
Exfoliation has many benefits for all skin types, but the results vary in how frequently you do it for each skin type. You may be able to exfoliate every single day, but other people may only be able to do it once a week. Exfoliating removes oil, dirt, dead skin and impurities. The right amount of exfoliation over a period of time can ensure softer and brighter-looking skin.

#3 SENSITIVE SKIN

Do you have skin that flushes easily? Frequently experiencing little bumps, patches or dry and flaky skin or have rashes appearing every now and then? If you do, then you may have sensitive skin. Sensitive skin reacts violently to fragrances and alcohols. If you are not careful enough, you may experience redness, a burning or stinging sensation after using a product on your face. However, sensitive skin varies from person to person. So although you and your friend both have sensitive skin, the way your skin reacts may not necessarily be the same.

CARING FOR SENSITIVE SKIN

If you have sensitive skin, it can be quite frustrating at times. If you aren’t careful enough and happen to use one that your skin is allergic to, your skin will immediately flare up.

1. Be careful when choosing cosmetic or skincare products
Avoid products with artificial fragrances or irritants like alcohol. You should look for products that have soothing, calming and anti-inflammatory effects as these are more gentle on the skin. Before purchasing a product, it is recommended for you to test out the product by applying a small amount of it onto your hand first. If there is no reaction after a few minutes, then it is most probably safe for you to use.

2. Avoid long baths or showers
Showers that take more than 15-20minutes are not your best friend if you have sensitive skin! Staying in the bath or shower for too long can strip your skin of its moisture and cause your skin to dry up and hence making it even more sensitive.

3. Turn down the heater
Some of us love showering with water of relatively high temperature, especially in the morning as it can serve as a pick-me-up. But did you know that heat can cause your skin to act up as well? So make sure you stick with lukewarm water!

4. Moisturise regularly
Moisturisers can be a really soothing product to slather on when your skin is acting up… And it is definitely one of the most important things to have especially if you are of this skin type. Do not skip the moisturiser, ladies.

#4 COMBINATION SKIN

Combination skin refers to simultaneously having both dry and oily skin. People with this skin type tend to have an oily T-zone but dry and dull-looking cheeks, temples and eye areas. You may notice larger pores, blackheads and extra shine on your T-zone as compared to your cheeks and the rest of your face.

CARING FOR COMBINATION SKIN

Your skincare routine may be a little bit more tedious if you are of this skin type. However, it is not impossible. In order to ace your skincare game with this skin type, you need to find the balance.


1. Avoid products with alcohol
Once again, it is highly recommended for you to stay away from products containing alcohol as it can be too harsh on the skin.

2. Use a gentle cleanser
You will never go wrong with a gentle face cleanser. In order to remove excess oils, sebum, dirt and impurities, cleansing your face is essential. In order to ensure that you wash away all of that while mattifying your oily areas without stripping the entire natural moisture of your cheeks, be sure to take your time in choosing the right product.

3. Treat different parts of the skin differently
Some people would prefer getting a product that is perfect and suitable for both dry and oily skin. However, we recommend against that. Although it is feasible and costs less, it would be better if you use different products for the different parts of your skin. Products that are suitable for dry skin are usually not suitable for oily skin. Moreover, who knows? Given time, it is possible that your tedious skincare routine eventually helps to balance the water & oil balance of your face.

4. Exfoliate weekly
As mentioned before, exfoliation plays a very important part in your skincare routine! For people of this skin type, we recommend that you exfoliate once or twice a week. That should do the trick!
